“It’s three o'clock in the morning, Sam.” Val leaned against the back of the door as she argued with him, her ex.
“I know. I’m sorry... I just ...” A pause. “Please, Val? Please open the door.”
“Why?”
“I can’t talk to you out here.”
“No. You can go home.”
“I can’t.” He sounded panicked.
What on earth? She yanked the door open and he nearly fell inside. “Why not?” she demanded.
“I just can’t.”
“Sam,” she warned. “Spill.”
“I thought it was too late for talk.”
“Talk or I’ll make you leave.”
“It’s that guy.”
“What guy?” Although she thought she knew which guy he meant.
“He’s at my house.”
“Which guy?”
“That young one... what’s his name - he’s been following you around. I don’t know why he’s started on me.”
“Emyr.” It wasn’t a question.
“Yeah... him.”
“Why is he following you?”
“I just said, I don’t know. You’d have to ask him”
“I will.” She pointed at the couch. “You sleep there.”
He got that look on his face. “Really? After everything we’ve done together.”
“We are not together now. You’re an ex, Sam. We parted on terms good enough to let you in the door at three am, but you will never get back in my bed.”
“Jeez... okay.”
“Good night, Sam.”
***
Val tossed and turned, trying to go back to sleep and failing. Why was Emyr at Sam’s place? Wait... how did Sam know who Emyr was? Or that he had been following her.
She didn’t think he was dangerous. That wasn’t the vibe she got from him.
She asked Sam in the morning. He showed her a photo one of his housemates had taken. It was definitely Emyr; standing with his back against a tree, ankles crossed. He had to know the picture was being taken. “Who took it?”
“Ben. He said he’s been around for a few days but he only got the shot last night and then he sent it to me.”
“Emyr is not dangerous. I don’t know what you’re scared of.”
“He’s been watching my house.” Sam had been left a house by a relative. He rented rooms out to people who cooked, and cleaned as well as contributed to the bills. She had been a tenant and then she’d been more than that.
“I’ll talk to him.”
“Doesn’t he scare you?” Sam asked.
“No. He’s annoying though.” She would have described Emyr as a puppy. An eager one who wanted her affection.
****
The next day she was more aware of people around her but she didn’t spot Emyr until the day after. He was outside her office when she left for lunch. His face lit up when she stomped across the mall to confront him. “Val!”
“Leave Sam alone.”
He pouted.
“Why are you even at his place? Answer me.”
“Can we talk somewhere?”
“No. “
“Please, Val. I’ll buy you lunch.”
“I don’t want-” but her stomach growled and betrayed her.
He obviously heard it. “There’s a bar a block over, but they do great lunches.”
She checked her watch. “I have to be back in an hour.”
He beamed at her.
***
The bar looked a bit shabby, more of a rough place than she usually frequented. A booth at the back would have suited her better but Emyr pulled out a chair for her at a table in the dead centre of the room. “Drink?” he asked.
“Just a soda.”
She watched as he went to the bar to order drinks. He had a glorious ass. Wide shoulders, slim hips, and not an ounce of fat on him. Pity he was so young. Too young to be in the bar, she belatedly realised. “Now, tell me what you’re up to.”
“We’ll order first.”
He ordered a mixed tapas platter, she a burger.
“Emyr?”
“Sam is not good for you.”
She frowned. “I know that; that’s why I dumped him and moved out.”
The meals appeared lightning fast. “Good lord, did we get someone else's’ food?”
He chuckled. “No. Probably not.”
Probably? Okay.
“Here,” he said. “Try this.” He held it out in front of her and she took it from his hand.
“That’s good.”
“So you aren’t getting back with Sam?”
“Ugh, no. That ship has well and truly sailed.” Busy holding her burger with both hands so that she could eat it, she was only half listening to him. “Wait up,” she said with a mouthful that she swallowed before adding, “What makes you say that?”
“He still likes you. Try this.” He fed her this piece from his fork as she was still holding her burger. He looked incredibly pleased to be sharing his meal with her.
“How did you get that from following him?”
He snorted. “It’s obvious. And you were visiting the house.” Now he fed her a piece of potato wedge.
“I was visiting Ben. He’s been having a rough time.”
“Oh.” He moved some food around on his plate and then glanced up at her through his brows. “Not Sam?”
“No. Ben was my friend when I lived there.”
“So how did you know it was me?”
“Sam showed up at my place at three am. Woke me up and said he was too scared to go home.” She snorted.
Emyr looked horrified but he was holding his fork in mid-air so she stole the chorizo from it. He blinked. “That sounds like a line.”
“That’s what I thought. You’re not scary.”
“No.” He appealed to her mutely.
“He slept on the couch,” she added. “I’m not that stupid.”
“Good.”
She studied him. “So why were you watching his place in the middle of the night.”
An eloquent shrug.
“Emyr, please tell me why.”
He met her eyes as he fed her some more potato.
It suddenly occurred to Val that the bar had gone very quiet. Everyone seemed to be watching them.
“It doesn’t matter now,” Emyr declared and gave her his last piece of roasted red pepper.
“It doesn’t?”
“No.” More meat this time. He beamed at her.
She chewed contemplatively. “So you’ll stop harassing Sam?”
“Yes.”
“Okay then. That’s all I wanted.” Val looked at her plate and grabbed a handful of French fries. “Here,” she said as she dumped them on his plate. “Payback.”
“I fed you,” he said quietly.
“True.” She shoved a fry in his mouth. “There! Now we’re even.”
“Yes, we are.” He looked very serious.
She was sure she heard the barmaid gasp and mutter something but didn’t hear it clearly.
“At any rate, I have to go back to work.”

Talking horses

I posted a new e-book on Smashwords tonight.

Yule quest

A descendant of a medieval paladin gets approached in an alley by a talking horse. It’s Christmas time and he’s drunk, so he doesn’t take it seriously. But he ends up being dragged across Ireland on a magical quest to find a sword; a sword that is needed by a fairy princess.

It originally started as another photo prompt. I will tell you how I got there because I know you are going to ask - the cliffs of Moher (as pictured on the cover) made me think of Arthur and the grail. I was thinking of the wonderful Susan Cooper series, 'The Dark is Rising'. Then I thought that Arthur had been done and I should do something else. I searched for a different artefact. I remebered the horn from Roland. I look up Roland - not only did he have a horn, and a sword, but he also had a magic talking horse, who could change size to accommodate up to four riders.  I ask you – I could not make this stuff up! The horse was a gift from the necromancer Maugris – look him up – whoa jackpot!

Visual prompts

When I first started writing, it was from a visual prompt on a Vin Diesel fansite. I know, right? http://forum.vinxperience.net/ They were the first people to support me and encourage me, and I will always thank them for that. They had a fiction section that suggested images for prompts. It fascinated me how the same image would become a completely different story for someone else.

Over the years I have kept a copy of some of those images that inspire me, but I just haven't got around to writing for, yet. One is this:

It is the most popular image in my photobucket account by a long shot. And I have all my banners from my twilight stories in there and some of those are pretty raunchy... lol

I know fallen angels are the ‘it’ thing in fiction right now, but it intrigues me.
I have searched to find where it comes from and who painted it. I think it is a game card from the ‘Magic; the gathering’ It’s a collectible trading card game.

But I cannot find any information on who actually painted the image. Different artists do images for the game, but there isn’t much info about who does which images.

I am fascinated by the dark chains he holds that bite into his flesh. I wonder if his hair is grey from age or experience? Who is he? What has he done? What power does he wield? The image makes me think of fallen angels and William Peter Blatty’s wonderful sequel to the Exorcist called ‘Legion’.

This is an excerpt from the wikipedia entry for the novel. Spoiler alert...

It was made into a movie, The Exorcist III, in 1990, directed by Blatty himself and starring George C. Scott as Lieutenant Kinderman. The final chapter of the novel, an epilogue, has Kinderman at a burger-bar with his faithful partner, Atkins. Kinderman explains to Atkins his thoughts and musings of the whole case and how it relates to his problem of the concept of evil. Kinderman ends by concluding that he believes the Big Bang was Lucifer falling from heaven, and that the entire Universe, including humanity, are the broken parts of Lucifer, and that evolution is the process of Lucifer putting himself together back into an angel.

What a concept!

One day I will write the story that goes with it. It’s in there, I know it; just under the surface somewhere.

Short stories and one shots

“Brevity is the soul of wit,” said Shakespeare.

Or as Marcus T. Cicero (106-43 BC) put it - much requoted by other writers.  “If I had more time, I would have written a shorter letter.”

I like writing one shots and smaller fics. I often panic that my word count is too low. I know! *rolls eyes at self*. I will reread something and be astonished that it is less than two thousand words and yet, feels so intense. I will receive a chapter update from another writer and it will be 15k words long and nothing really happens. That’s a massive number of words for me. I have come to realise that my brevity might be a good thing. The problem is, of course, that there is a small market for short stories. Most of my current Smashwords e-books would be considered short stories.

But I do love writing them. And I especially love photo prompts. They get my muse going. So I was very excited by the truly anonymous twilight one shot contest. I also liked the anonymity of it. http://ficcontest.info/ They were very clear that all writers, reviewers and promotions had to be anonymous. I didn’t even tell anyone I had entered, just to be on the safe side.

I chatted with my beta ruadh sidhe about the prompts and when she saw the photo prompts she laughed that they had given me too much time to send in an entry. ‘You will write forty five stories for all the prompts’, she suggested. Yeah, right. I only wrote thirteen. What would she know…? lol. And oddly, they weren’t the sexier prompts that people might have expected me to use.

I loaded them all on JBNP and got accused of spamming the site by one friend, in jest. I have put them here with the caveat that the images belong to whoever they belong to; I am not claiming them as mine. But the stories? Those are mine.

The problem is, now everyone wants me to extend them all. Lmao

Father John Misty

Father John Misty is not what he sounds like. It is actually the AKA for Joshua Tillman. He was the drummer with Fleet Foxes who are an awesomely cool band as well.
I love this song and the lyrics are great too. The rights for the song and music clip, of course, belong to J Tillman.

FR. JOHN MISTY’S “HOLLYWOOD FOREVER CEMETERY SINGS”

Jesus Christ, girl
What are people going to think?
When I show up to one of several funerals
I’ve attended for Grandpa this week

With you
With me
But someone’s got to help me dig

Jesus Christ, girl
It hasn’t been long so it seems
Since I was picking out an island and a tomb for you
At the Hollywood Cemetery

You kiss
On me
But we should let this dead guy sleep

Jesus Christ, girl
I laid up for hours in a daze
Retracing the expanse of your American back
With Adderall and weed in my veins

You came
I think?
Because the marble made my cheeks look pink
But I’m unsure of so many things

But
Someone’s got to help me dig

I just can't work out (yet) how to embed the video in here. Still on my blog 'L' plates here.

The girl in the clip is a complete train-wreck and I say that with awe.  I swear there is a story in there somewhere. She's a disaster! But really, who hasn't danced with a lamp at least once in their lives?

You haven't? What the? Add it to your bucket list... lmao
